Type 2 diabetes causes increased insulin resistance. This results in hyperinsulinemia. It is a condition which results in accumulation of insulin in blood stream. Diabetes can affect various processes in human body. This results in high risk of cancer in patients suffering from type 2 diabetes mellitus.
Breast cancer, colon cancer, and pancreatic cancer are the major cancer concerns in diabetic patients. Let us try to understand more about complications of type 2 diabetes and cancer.
Complications With Type 2 Diabetes And Cancer
This is a severe complication of diabetes. Type 2 diabetes doubles the risk of pancreatic cancer in patients. Abnormal blood sugar levels can cause critical changes in pancreas resulting in cancer.
Changes caused by type 2 diabetes in gene mutations are responsible for pancreatic cancer. Tumor suppressing genes are deactivated in type 2 diabetes due to insulin resistance and presence of high levels of insulin in body. All of this results in a positive environment in human body for the development of pancreatic cancer.
Breast cancer can occur in various forms like nodules, cysts, and other kinds of growths. Studies have shown that women who suffer from type 2 diabetes have an increased risk of developing breast cancer due to menstruation and chemical changes in their body.
These changes can be direct or indirect consequence of type 2 diabetes. Advanced forms of breast cancers often lead to mastectomy. Therefore, it is a critical indirect complication of type 2 diabetes.
This is one of the major complications of type 2 diabetes that results in death of diabetic patients. Type 2 diabetes is also known to accelerate liver disease.
Liver cancer as a consequence of diabetes is also one of the major reasons for liver transplantations around the world. Liver disease and diabetes are inter-related. Hepatocellular carcinoma is caused due to changes in liver caused by hyperinsulinemia. This results in variety of abnormal changes of liver enzymes which leads to cancer.
Colon cancer can affect any part of colon in human body. This is another type of cancer complication associated with type 2 diabetes. Studies performed to find a connection between colon cancer and type 2 diabetes have shown an increased risk of colon cancer in diabetic patients.
However, this outcome of medical studies is largely based on increased occurrence of colon cancer in diabetic patients. It is not based on medically-proven chemical relation between diabetes and colon cancer.
This type of cancer complication has been a controversial consequence of diabetes. This is because it is related to type 2 diabetes medication. The medication “Actos” was recently found to cause bladder cancer in patients with type 2 diabetes.
The drug was found to increase the chances of bladder cancer up to 80% with prolonged use. The medical study was performed in France in 2011. However, increased insulin levels are also known to contribute to the development of bladder cancer as well.
Type 2 diabetes is associated with various types of cancers due to its ability to cause different kinds of changes in body. It affects pancreas, liver, and colon in a significant way. Complications like diabetic neuropathy and hyperinsulinemia play a critical role in development of cancers.
